Edsel came out on Sunday, good communication and texted he'd be here. When he got here, he confirmed my suspicions that it was a capacitor which is a very simple repair/installation (for lack of a better analogy, it is loosely equivalent to replacing a fuse in a car...not too hard)...and he said it would be about $200, but he may be able to discount it for me somewhat. Having suspected it was the capacitor, I had already ordered one the previous night and it was to be delivered to my house via Amazon...it cost $17. So I told him I'd wait for it to arrive and install it myself instead of paying a $180 markup on a $17 part. He said OK, but since he didn't install it and did not have a "sample" or "working' capacator...he could not check the rest of the system...so that was the end of the service call...fair enough I guess, but it would have been nice to have the rest of the system checked. So he then said the service call was $209...so I tried to remember from my original phone call with the dispatcher...and the cost should be $179...so Edsel accepted that and I paid him in cash....but kinda felt like it had been a price negotiation...which I wasn't expecting.
The following day I get an e-mail from Green Leaf with invoice for $179...but it doesn't say paid...so I call them, and the lady who answered at first asked how I'd like to pay...I said I did...and she checked and verified it...and agreed and sent me a e-mail with a "paid" invoice. She also confirmed that the capacitor part is normally priced at between $150-$180...which is still about a 10x markup (remember, you've already paid for a labor/service call), but she did say that it is covered by 1 year parts and service warranty.
Final Analysis: EXCELLENT RESPONSE TIME and Edsel did seem very qualified at his job.
COST/PRICING: Seemed to be always a negotiation that I had to be aware of...and I get that they need to make money...but up to you whether you think the parts 10x markup is excessive or not...for me, I think it was since a service call had already been paid for.
Honest, trustworthy and get the job done right!
Highly recommend 😊

Back to the Basics
What is a Heat Pump And How Do They Work
Heating pumps are more efficient than traditional air conditioners and furnaces. They pull heat out of a room instead of pushing in the air to cool it down. Some units are even as much as 50 percent more efficient than traditional furnaces and air conditioners.
There are many different kinds of heat pumps on the market right now, and they are not all equal. You want to avoid getting stuck with the wrong unit.
If you are interested in switching over, call a Green Leaf heat pump specialist for your heat pump installation, repair, or maintenance.

Everything You Need To Know About Heat Pump Installation And Repairs
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Switching to a Heat Pump
Heat pump installation can be upwards of thousands of dollars, depending on the size of your home. A figure that does not even include the actual system. That is why it is vital that you know the advantages and disadvantages of switching to a heat pump. Read on to discover why heat pumps are taking the industry by storm.
Advantages
Heat pump installation is one of the best things you can do for your wallet in the long run. Not only do heat pumps last longer than traditional HVAC systems, but they are also infinitely more efficient. It won’t take long to notice that a higher efficiency rating means lower energy bills.
You will only need a professional heat pump servicer every 3-5 years.
Disadvantages
The 30-60% increase in efficiency heat pumps bring to the table explains part of the price tag. The other part comes from the heat pump being two systems in one. It can switch between heating and cooling functions, allowing you to care for one system instead of two.
The average life expectancy of a heat pump is 15 years, but it has gone up as far as 50. Climate and maintenance schedules become significant factors when talking about life expectancy.
Texas Weather and Heat Pumps
Is Heat Pump Installation The Right Move For Your Home?
You may be wondering if heat pump installation suits your Central Texas home. Texas weather is often unpredictable.
As soon as you plan for one type of weather, you get hit with something different. Of course, some winter days can get pretty cold, but you never know when you might be wearing shorts. Heat pumps can easily switch between cooling and heating, so you no longer need two different systems.
Pumps can absorb heat in temperatures lower than 20 degrees Fahrenheit, although they begin losing efficiency at 40 degrees. You wouldn’t want a heat pump somewhere it was dropping below 20 degrees consistently, but they are perfect in a place like Texas.
They Are Much More Cost Effective for Texas Winters
A furnace can be overpowering in a place that rarely dips below freezing. Overpowering is never a good thing, especially regarding your heating system. You may struggle to find a comfortable temperature for your home. You will also pay for all the extra energy your furnace uses.
Heat pumps are most efficient in temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes them highly efficient for Texans all year round. Heating is a big part of heat pumps, but as a Texas resident, you are probably asking, “but what about a/c? “
Heat Pumps Heat AND Cool
With the flip of a switch, you can go from heating your home to cooling it. This kind of flexibility comes in handy here. Your home will always be at a comfortable temperature. It does not matter if it’s a blazing hot summer day, an all too warm winter kind of day, a kind of cold day, or an endless ice storm — heat pumps can take it all.
Heat Pump Repair
Common Problems and Simple Solutions
Heat pumps are expensive, so when problems arise, it is frustrating. Sometimes the solution is simple and something you can fix without help. It is always good to check first, but it can sometimes be more challenging than that. We want to walk you through some of the most basic problems people face with heat pumps.
If you can’t troubleshoot it here, a Green Leaf technician is always standing by for emergency calls and questions.
We want you to use your hard-earned time and money on the things you love. Not a costly heat pump repair. Trying the most straightforward solutions before calling in backup is always a good call:
- Check the thermostat’s power. If it is turned off or, more likely, incorrectly calibrated at installation, you will experience difficulties. If you are able to get the system powered up, you will notice that the air is not at the correct temperature.
- Make sure the outdoor unit did not accidentally get unplugged.
- Remove anything blocking or covering the vents on the outdoor unit. Keep ice and debris from building up and blocking the vents around your outside unit.
Common Problems
Your problem could range from low refrigerant to a miscalibrated thermostat. However, faulty parts are also a concern. A trustworthy Heat Pump specialist, like the ones at Green Leaf, can easily find the cause of your problem. As heat pump repair experts, they can also help you solve it.
It would help if you had someone you’re confident in and know will be able to find the issue. If you hear grinding or squealing noises, call Green Leaf right away. Something minor could be wrong with your heat pump, but it is not worth the risk. It is likely to enter an early grave if left unchecked.
If you are having trouble switching your heat pump from one system to the other, your reversal valve is either stuck or broken. While this sounds bad, this is usually a pretty simple fix for a professional. Just give Green Leaf a call for heat pump repair and we will fix that for you in no time.

New VS Old
Do You Need a Heat Pump Repair Or Should It Be Replaced Entirely?
We don’t always want to admit when it’s time to replace something that cost us a lot. Even if it is something we use every day. We want things repaired by ourselves or a professional, but we rarely want to invest in the future. It’s no different with your heat pump.
An excellent heat pump will last between 10-20 years, depending on how well you take care of it. Around year fifteen, you will begin to notice a drop in efficiency. Fifteen years is a great lifespan, but 20 is even better. It can make it there if maintained well.
Still, signs will begin to appear when the time for a new heat pump is coming.
Old HVAC systems are simply less efficient. It does not matter what kind of system you use. Inefficiency takes many forms.
- It could look like a significant spike in energy bills.
- It could feel like inconsistent temperatures in your home.
- You could experience hot and cold spots in a room.
- It may take longer to reach the correct temperature or be less effective at keeping things hot or cold.
Most heat pump repairs should be straightforward for certified technicians. In most cases, your system is back up and flawlessly running by the end of the day.
For example, if you find you are constantly low on refrigerant, there are bound to be leaks in the sealant. Leaks get more and more common as your system ages. Constantly needing to replace old and worn-out parts is also a bad sign.
A good rule of thumb to follow when trying to determine if you should repair or replace your heat pump is this:
It is worth switching if the total cost of repairs is nearly 50 percent of what a replacement would cost. It is more of an investment upfront but will save you thousands of dollars on heat pump repairs and energy bills.
