Edsel came out on Sunday, good communication and texted he'd be here. When he got here, he confirmed my suspicions that it was a capacitor which is a very simple repair/installation (for lack of a better analogy, it is loosely equivalent to replacing a fuse in a car...not too hard)...and he said it would be about $200, but he may be able to discount it for me somewhat. Having suspected it was the capacitor, I had already ordered one the previous night and it was to be delivered to my house via Amazon...it cost $17. So I told him I'd wait for it to arrive and install it myself instead of paying a $180 markup on a $17 part. He said OK, but since he didn't install it and did not have a "sample" or "working' capacator...he could not check the rest of the system...so that was the end of the service call...fair enough I guess, but it would have been nice to have the rest of the system checked. So he then said the service call was $209...so I tried to remember from my original phone call with the dispatcher...and the cost should be $179...so Edsel accepted that and I paid him in cash....but kinda felt like it had been a price negotiation...which I wasn't expecting.
The following day I get an e-mail from Green Leaf with invoice for $179...but it doesn't say paid...so I call them, and the lady who answered at first asked how I'd like to pay...I said I did...and she checked and verified it...and agreed and sent me a e-mail with a "paid" invoice. She also confirmed that the capacitor part is normally priced at between $150-$180...which is still about a 10x markup (remember, you've already paid for a labor/service call), but she did say that it is covered by 1 year parts and service warranty.
Final Analysis: EXCELLENT RESPONSE TIME and Edsel did seem very qualified at his job.
COST/PRICING: Seemed to be always a negotiation that I had to be aware of...and I get that they need to make money...but up to you whether you think the parts 10x markup is excessive or not...for me, I think it was since a service call had already been paid for.
Honest, trustworthy and get the job done right!
Highly recommend 😊
While Eddie and I had a disagreement on the unit installed, Eddie went out of his way to get it resolved. I finally agreed with him.
I will use them again.
As for most folks that evaluate a company, they have their checklist for rating and ranking. So here is a quick summary on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best).
1) Cost 8.5 - very competitive cost quote, took extra time to develop/deliver several quotes & proposals. Easy to work with.
2) Quality: 9.5 - top marks for the quality of work, equipment, and technicians (Josh) + installers (Fernando & helper).
3) Dependable & Professional 10 - show up on time as scheduled, very polite, professional, skilled and knowledgeable.
4) Job installation: 10 - completed on time; very professional work.
5) Follow up by owner: 10 - very impressed that Eddie took the time to reach out and make sure everything was completed to our satisfaction.
Overall, give them a 5+ star rating and would definitely recommend them to friends & family!

The last time i had service was a couple of weeks ago and I was happy with the tech and service. They did charge $180.00 for a $14.00 part and 120.00 to replace it.
My previous review is below.
Green leaf always provides great service and guidance! Currently I am waiting for a warrantied part.
After reviewing other quotes, I decided to stick with Green Leaf. The reason was the quote was "mid-range", not too low such that the job is not done well, and not too high such that they are just going after money. As well as the professionalism demonstrated by Edzel on site. Everything was documented by taking pictures so that it could be relayed to his supervisors and get feedback on his analysis. This "double check" helps, to get things right the first time.
I like they notified me at each stage as well as with who was on route. The e-mail contains a small bio on the person arriving at your door, notified via text, and with the larger install, a call on the estimated arrival time. The install went well, and this is another place Green Leaf shinned from my previous company experience. After the previous contractor took a "brute force" approach on the air handler and cut / re-wired to get one function working, Green Leaf took the time to correctly re-wire it and get the entire unit working. This surprised me as they had only installed the condenser but went above and beyond to fix a different component (no fault of theirs) at no charge. They had my homes best interest in mind to get everything working that day. Such that the owner (Eddie) called to follow up on the job and any further concerns I may have.
I would gladly recommend them and re-hire them if needed.

What Is A Furnace?
How They Work
A furnace is the part of your HVAC system that warms your home. It usually heats a building by circulating warm air through ducts and into individual rooms through the vents. The most common type of furnace runs on natural gas or oil. However, other kinds rely on electricity. Furnaces have a lot of heating power and are the most reliable heat source in the winter. This is because combustion, or the reaction of burning off fuel, produces a lot of heat energy. There is always a Green Leaf Heating Specialist ready to answer your questions about furnaces. First, let’s talk about the different types of furnaces.
The Four Most Common Types Of Furnace
You start the process of burning fuel and heating your air as soon as you set the thermostat. At that point, a fan switches on, circulating warm air into your home. There are four different kinds of furnaces. The most significant difference between them is how heat transfers into the air. The four main furnace types are listed below from most efficient to least.
Natural gas furnaces are the most popular type in the United States. It, of course, runs on natural gas. Once ignited, it separates the clean, warm air from the toxic waste in the combustion chamber. The warm air is then released into the rooms. The same process repeats once the air cools and the furnace draws it back.
Half of the homes in the US use natural gas furnaces, although that percentage varies by region. Older gas furnaces were only about 65% efficient, but now they have efficiency ratings of up to 98%.
Oil furnaces are similar to gas furnaces. They create heat through combustion or the burning of fuel. These furnaces are most common in the Northeastern United States. Oil furnaces are less efficient than gas furnaces, with an average rating of 80% – 90%. However, on average, oil furnaces are 25% cheaper than natural gas ones. The biggest difference here is that this furnace runs on oil instead of gas or propane. However, heat is still created via combustion. Warm air relies on the oil tank. First, the oil heats up and transforms into a spray as it moves over the burner chamber. It is then released into the air.
Electric furnaces are entirely independent of the other three furnaces. They create heat through a series of electrical components instead of combustion. The parts are usually coils that pull electricity from your house and use the resistor to convert it into heat. Once the air warms, it releases into the air ducts and fills your home.
Electric furnaces are the most affordable kind of system. Some models are up to half the price of natural gas and oil systems. They are also easier to install and may last several years longer than other types of furnaces. However, you should be aware that electricity is more expensive than gas. An electric furnace will make up the difference in energy bills.
Propane furnaces are like natural gas and oil furnaces. They convert propane into heat through combustion at the system’s burner. The heat exchanger absorbs the heat. The blower motor then blows air over the heat exchanger. The heat energy warms the air in the exchanger as it forces its way out and into the home.
A propane-fueled furnace is an excellent option if you are in a place where natural gas or oil is hard to come by. About 10% of US households use propane-based heating appliances.
Before you dive into furnace repairs, make sure you understand the kind of needs your specific type of furnace has. Discussing the specifics of your furnace with a Green Leaf Heating expert would be beneficial. Some unique challenges and benefits come with each furnace. Discussing your options with a knowledgeable technician will help put your mind at ease and give you the confidence to move forward.
Using a Furnace In Austin, Texas
The Pros and Cons of Heating Your Texas Home With a Furnace
Whether a furnace is beneficial to your Texas home is a reasonable question to ask. Furnaces are heavy-duty heating appliances, and Texas winters tend to be mild. Surprisingly most Texas homes do have furnaces. Southern Texas homes typically use other heating systems, but furnaces do very well in the Austin area. Winters are mild, but temperatures get low, and you will want a reliable heating source to warm your home.
Take a look at the pros and cons of furnaces in Texas. Then, if it is a good fit, call your resident heating experts at Green Leaf Heating.

Pros of Furnaces in Texas
Furnaces are much cheaper when it comes to furnace repairs or replacement. While the unit is generally less expensive to install, furnaces are also less likely to need repairs. They tend to last longer than other units. Heat pumps, for example, live for about ten years on average, while furnaces last between 15-20. The interior design of a heat pump is much more complicated than what happens inside a furnace. More complex processes create more room for error.
Other heating options rely on outside air to provide heat. Furnaces, on the other hand, create heat through combustion. That means they operate at optimal levels despite how cold it is outside. Take heat pumps as an example again. Their efficiency ratings begin to drop at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. They can no longer heat your home if they spend too much time trying to work in temperatures below 20 degrees.
It does not get painfully cold in Texas too often, but it can be miserable when it does. Texas weather is also famously unpredictable. The last thing you want is a heater that breaks down from exhaustion. Furnaces have perfected their ability to heat your home in a reliable and cheap manner, even in the harshest conditions.
Furnaces, for the most part, are solely used for heating. You only need it for a few months out of the year, and then you switch to a different system. What that means for your furnace is that it takes a lot less damage than a unit that both heats and cools. For the same reason, the filters must only be replaced every 90 days.
Cons of Furnaces in Texas
Furnaces tend to be less expensive than other types of heating when they need repairs or replacement. The caveat is that they are more costly to operate in general.
Electric furnaces use more electricity all around and therefore are less efficient. Oil and natural gas furnaces are less expensive to run than electric ones. Still, the cost to operate varies based on oil and gas prices. Texas has reasonable gas prices, which works well with furnaces, but that is not the case everywhere.
It may be beneficial to speak with an expert in the cost of gas and electricity, like the ones at Green Leaf HVAC and Plumbing.
Furnace repair should only be performed by professionals with the required skills and knowledge. Gas furnaces, especially, pose a high risk to your health. Known risks of servicing your own furnace include:
- Fire
- Explosion
- Toxic gas leaks in the home
Consider your needs carefully when choosing a heating system. It can always be helpful to reach out to someone who knows the ins and outs of heating homes in Texas. Green Leaf performs any furnace service you may need – from diagnostics to installation to furnace repair. We can even keep it maintained for you.

Avoid Furnace Repairs
How Regular Maintenance Can Save You Thousands of Dollars
Furnace repairs are a massive inconvenience, especially when the damage is irreparable. The answer is as simple as regular maintenance. Having your system serviced once a year will reduce furnace repair costs. When repairs are less frequent and less severe, you save money. You will continue to save money every month because a healthy furnace does not have to work as hard. The increase in efficiency lowers your energy bills. Finally, consistent Green Leaf furnace service will prolong the life of your furnace and reduce the risks of malfunction. It’s simple. When your furnace operates lighter, it lives longer. You save thousands of dollars when your furnace continues to operate efficiently because you maintain your system instead of investing in a new one.
Maintenance is essential, but it can also feel inconvenient at times. That is why Green Leaf wants to ensure furnace service is as easy for you as possible. If you have more questions about how you can avoid furnace repair, call Green Leaf. There is always an experienced HVAC technician waiting to answer your questions. Make sure to ask about how one of our maintenance plans can make a difference for you.
Common Problems Experienced by Exhausted Furnaces
Should You Call a Professional or Fix it Yourself?
Most people consider Texas winter mild. We rarely have days that stay in temperatures under 15 degrees, and we don’t get a lot of snow. Still, that does not mean it doesn’t get cold. The worst time to realize you need furnace repairs is when it is already cold outside. There are a few conditions for Texas furnaces that indicate it needs service.
The job of a furnace is 90 percent blowing hot air. If all you can get is room-temp air, there is a problem. Try turning off the fan setting to ensure the furnace is not circulating simple air instead of warm air. Switching off the fan would be a simple fix, but you should also check the fuel levels if that doesn’t work. If you cannot find the problem, it’s time to call a Green Leaf HVAC and Plumbing specialist.
The struggle to blow air at all is also a problem. There could be several reasons why your furnace will now blow air. However, it most likely means something is interrupting the airflow. The cause is generally dirt and debris building up. Pollutants clog the filters and prevent air from passing through. If this happens, some furnaces have a backup feature designed to shut itself off. It is for backup because it’s only to prevent overheating that accompanies buildup. Furnaces will give the illusion that air is not working when this feature is active.
If the furnace isn’t receiving enough gas, it cannot operate. A leak in the gas line could allow it to escape instead of heat. There could also be dirt clogging the hose, preventing the furnace from receiving gas. A clogged gas line is especially likely without regular furnace service. Part of the furnace service includes checking the gas lines for clogged parts and leaks. Preventing furnace repair starts with maintenance.
If you are looking for a technician to service your furnace, call Green Leaf HVAC and Plumbing.
The heat exchanger is one of the most critical parts of a furnace. It absorbs the combusted heat and warms the air. It also filters the fumes of the fuel from the air, so it is breathable. When the furnace is in heating mode, the exchanger expands. It contracts when the system is not in use. These small changes can build up over time. The heat exchanger will eventually crack through overuse and continuous cycling. The heat exchanger is generally an expensive furnace repair. It has also caused the need for total system replacement depending on the extent of the damage.
The pilot light’s function in a furnace is to ignite the burners. A healthy pilot light should illuminate blue and never flicker. A different color of light usually means that gas is building up. For example, a yellowish-orange color could be an excessive buildup of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a very serious gas that is odorless and has life-threatening effects.
You should always call an expert at Green Leaf HVAC and Plumbing anytime the color of your pilot light changes. Furnace repairs are dangerous because of fire and toxic gas leak risks. You should never work on a natural gas appliance without the necessary training. Instead, hire a specialized HVAC company like Green Leaf in the Austin, Texas, area.
Above are just a few of the most common repairs needed for furnaces in Austin, Texas. However, there is one major similarity between the most common furnace repair problems. They are all avoidable with regular maintenance and attention. Furnace repair should mean more than total furnace failure. However, if left unattended, that is what will happen. Be sure to get your yearly inspection to avoid costly repairs and replacements.
Call Austin-operated Green Leaf for all your furnace needs. We will show you how the quality of service you receive from us is different. If you already know that you need a new furnace, check out our furnace installation page.

How Much Is That Going To Cost?
Breaking Down the Cost of Furnace Repair by Part
Your furnace is a critical appliance in your home. It keeps you warm while also keeping your house warm and dry. Your pipes would burst in the freezing weather without it, and mold would reign over the moisture in your air. Keeping your furnace up to date on repairs and maintenance will save you time and frustration. In addition, there are always signs that failure is coming, and knowing what they are will save you money.
You will save money by acting on signs like:
- Inadequate heating
- Strong odors: burning plastic or rotten eggs
- Loud noises
- Increase in electricity bills
There is a slight difference in furnace repair costs among the different types. Electric furnaces are the cheapest to repair. Their expenses generally sit between $50 and $300. Oil and gas-based repairs are more expensive, between $300 and $1,200. Keep in mind that the replacement of a part will always be more expensive than having it repaired. Keeping your furnace maintained will prevent you from having to make unnecessary replacements.
Call Green Leaf HVAC and Plumbing for greater detail on the cost of repairing a particular part of your furnace.
The typical cost for one furnace service call is between $100 to $300. Not at Green Leaf. We make regular maintenance easy. Our annual maintenance plan includes two service visits per year at $159. The best part is that you can schedule the appointment and forget about it. We will call you before the appointment and remind you we are coming. Your furnace does a lot for you, so keep it happy.
