What Is A Mini Split Air Conditioner and Why Is It Ductless?

What You Need to Know About Ductless Mini Splits

Ductless Mini Splits have recently become the most popular HVAC unit on the market. This is because they have been designed to control your home’s temperature while saving you money.

Mini-splits have three main components. There is an outdoor unit, an indoor unit, and line sets. The condensing unit sits outside. Condenser coils send air through line sets leading to the indoor units. Line sets are small tubes of refrigerant that connect the units through small holes in the wall. The indoor units are typically wall-mounted. Ductless mini splits capture air in their zone and pull it over cold coils. They then blow the air back out into the room. There are no ducts involved to carry air around. There are only copper line sets that circulate refrigerant and trap heat to take outside.

Green Leaf Mini Split Installation Will Change the Way You do Air

How Are Ductless Mini Splits Different Than Central Air

Traditional air conditioners have a series of ducts that carry air through your home.  It heats up or cools this air down to a set temperature and pushes it into the different rooms.  Central air systems maintain the temperature of your entire house in one setting.

Mini Splits are ductless, meaning they do not send air through ducts.  Instead, there are individual units in each room that you control.  Each indoor unit has its own line set that connects it to the outdoor unit.  The outdoor unit then uses these connections to distribute refrigerant.  Each indoor unit has its zone and only controls the temperature in that space.

Without air ducts, the system can be more efficient.  Air ducts account for thirty percent of the energy lost in central a/c.  That means you are spending thirty percent more than you have to on your electricity bill every month. Green Leaf offers Mitsubishi ductless mini split.  These are the best mini splits currently on the market and lead the industry in efficiency.

Ductless mini splits provide more flexibility than central air.  Indoor units are independent of each other, meaning you can control each unit separately.  Part of this bump in efficiency comes from operating different units at different times.  You are allowed the flexibility of cooling the rooms currently in use without cooling the entire house.

Central air still has the market cornered on large spaces like apartment buildings.  The ducts allow traditional a/c to maintain a consistent temperature in many rooms and large open areas.  Still, ductless units are catching up quickly.  There are already systems that can manage up to 9 zones.

Ductless systems are more expensive upfront.  The reasoning relies on their efficiency.  Part of this efficiency comes from the system not needing to cool your entire house all day.  However, the real boost in efficiency comes from the lack of ducts.  On average, thirty percent of cooling power escapes through the air ducts.

Call a Green Leaf technician if you want to save a ton of money on electricity bills.  We have the skills and knowledge to help you upgrade your HVAC system. We can help answer your questions or concerns regarding ductless mini split or mini split installation to better serve your needs.

Choosing the Perfect System For Mini Split Installation

What To Look For When Purchasing A Ductless Mini Split

Mini split installation is expensive. Still, the results can be disastrous and cost even more if done incorrectly. Installing the unit correctly on the first try is important, but choosing the right system to be installed is vital. Green Leaf wants to help ensure you get the right system at the right price. Our licensed technicians can install, maintain, and repair just about any HVAC system.

However, this journey begins long before installation — the system you choose matters. We are here to ensure you know what you’re looking for, even if you go with a different company for installation. Below are several things to consider when looking at mini-splits.

A single zone refers to one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. It is common to use a single-zone system for add-ons and bedrooms that do not have air ducts. Multi-zone mini-split systems work the same as single-zone systems. Each one is connected directly to the outside unit. The only difference is that you can control each zone independently. A zone is typically made up of a single room. Ensure that it is powerful enough to cool that space before proceeding.

Know how powerful the system needs to be to cool each zone. Ductless mini splits measure power in BTUs. A BTU measures the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of a pound of water. The number of BTUs needed varies based on square footage. For example, multi-zone systems need fewer BTUs because the individual units are cooling less area. Single-zone mini-splits will need more BTUs. You must ensure your system has enough power to regulate the temperature in its zone.
Ductless mini splits have two different types of compressors, rotary and inverter. A rotary compressor maintains your set temperature by turning on and off with full power. Inverter compressors only use enough power to accomplish the desired temperature. It then goes idle until it needs more energy to maintain that setting.
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio Efficiency measures how efficiently a cooling system operates. Higher ratings mean a higher level of efficiency. As of right now, there are federal requirements stating mini-splits must have a 13 or higher. However, it is important to note that the higher the SEER rating, the higher the price tag.
These are a few things to consider, but many other factors need consideration when making this decision. At Green Leaf, we want you to feel confident in your choice. Let Us help you find the model that works best for you.

Common Problems Experienced with Ductless Mini Splits

Mini Split Installation and Maintenance Mess Ups

It is no secret that ductless mini splits are among the most expensive HVAC systems in the industry. However, they save you hundreds of dollars per year on electricity. Still, the amount of money you have to invest upfront remains the same. You must take care of the system you have invested so much in. A part of that is staying aware of the common problems mini-splits encounter.

Here is a list of some typical problems:

The refrigerant lines, or line sets, are the most challenging part of the installation process. A leak in the refrigerant line, especially early on, indicates that the mini split installation was not done correctly. A leak could also mean trouble for your compressor.

The chemicals leaked are liable to damage your walls and flooring. You should call a technician from Green Leaf at first sight of either of these problems.

Dirt and dust buildup are terrible for any air conditioner. Ductless mini splits are no different. Unfortunately, letting dust and dirt buildup often leads to compressor failure. To avoid this, you should clean the air filters once a month and spray down the outside unit. Keeping furniture at least four feet away from the indoor units is also a good idea. Furniture encourages dust to linger and build up on the mini-split.
Installing the incorrect size of the mini-split turns into a problem very fast. If your cooling capacity is too high for the space you are trying to cool, the system may be unable to cool down the room. When it cannot cool down, it is likely to blow hot air instead. A heating capacity that is too high for the space you are trying to heat causes a similar problem. However, instead of blowing hot air, it only blows cold.
As we have discussed earlier, proper mini split installation is vital. If the unit is not installed correctly, all kinds of problems can arise. For example, it may not be fitted to the size of your space. As a result, your system will be less efficient, and your electricity bill will go up. It could also lead to costly repairs or even reinstallation. To take care of your ductless mini split, you will need the help of a trusted HVAC company like Green Leaf. We are certified to install, maintain, and repair ductless mini splits of all kinds.

Mini Split Installation is Expensive so Maintenance Matters!

Tips for Maintaining Your Ductless Mini Split

The best thing you can do to honor your mini split installation is to keep up with your system maintenance.  Maintenance is easy and revolves around keeping the unit dust and dirt free.

First, you need to turn off the system and give it time to cool down whenever you plan to clean it. The filters are reusable, but you should take them out and clean them once a month.  You cannot allow dust to build up on the indoor units.  Not even on their exterior. Dusting them every so often will keep excess dirt from building up. You should also keep furniture at least 4 feet away from the indoor units.  Doing this will further prevent excess dust buildup. Remember that allowing dust and dirt to build makes your system work harder and costs you more electricity.

Next, take a look at your outdoor unit.  You cannot allow dirt to build up there, either.  Coils are an essential element to the health of your mini split.  When dirt builds up on them, they trap heat inside.  This can turn into a big problem down the road. To keep them from collecting buildup, use a regular garden hose and spray it at the outdoor unit. It would be best if you were careful not to bend the fins.  But, if you do, it is okay.  There is a tool called a fin comb that can easily straighten them back out. Be careful not to leave them bent for too long.  This is a great way to put your compressor in an early grave.

Hiring a certified HVAC technician, like the ones at Green Leaf, is the most critical part of maintenance.  Professional HVAC specialists know how to look for and find problems before they become significant issues. We make it easy on you with our maintenance plans.  Set the appointment and then forget about it.  We will call to remind you that we are coming.
